Puerto Rican Supermodel Joan Smalls, stole the show at the VMAs (well that is until Miley Cyrus attempted to pull a Rih Rih/old school Britney with Robin Thicke).
As we’ve been inundated with celebrity holiday pics, it was nice to see someone ready for winter, and Joan made the case for Autumn/Winter make-up an easy one.
Sporting groomed thick brows, surely the look of 2013, Joan contoured her cheeks with bronzer (clearly she read Blush last week!), eyeliner winged at the rims and subtle gold eyeshadow to compliment her skin.
The piece d’resistance however, was her glossy berry lip, which is not as matte as we’ve seen in the seasons before. Wearing her hair straight and in a sleek centre-parting Joan put the glamour into grunge, which is inspiring for those not feeling the Courtney Love look championed at Saint Laurent Paris for next season.
Even though I will definitely be channelling the look in its purest scruffiest form, Joan has inspired me to polish up for my birthday this weekend.
Although I’m saving the A/W collections fir a big september reveal, here are some lippies, available now to get you started.
Nars’ satin lipstick is a winner. It’s silky to apply and is infused with micro-conditioning bubbles to keeps lips hydrated all day; the swankiest lip balm around.
Nars, Satin Lipstick in Russian Doll, £17.50. Exclusive to Nars.
I have three Laura Mercier lipsticks, but Sienna is my favourite. It’s not as dark as Joan’s so great for those taking baby steps. The packaging’s understated but the pigment is rich and the finish, a subtle shimmer.
Laura Mercier, Creme Smooth Lip Color in Sienna. £20 from SpaceNK.
The cult favourite and the most expensive, but that’s Tom Ford all over. It’s the ultimate in luxury from it’s packaging to the Brazilian murumuru butter and chamomilla flower oil it’s infused with. Black Orchid is the best for achieving Joan’s deep red. Although if you can wait until September there’s a new top dog on the way (hint: think bruised).
Tom Ford, Lip Colour, Black Orchid. £36 available at Selfridges.
The purse-friendly option, Beguiled caused quite the storm when it launched a couple of years ago. I remember having to buy four because they kept selling out. Now things have calmed down a bit you can buy them at your leisure. It’s obviously not as luscious as Mercier, Ford or Nars but at £8 it does the job effectively; great for those not quite ready to commit.
Topshop, Lips in Beguiled. £8 available at Topshop.
