There’s nothing like sparkly nails to lift your mood, and since the festive season is fully upon us, there’s no better time to dabble in a bit of glitz.
Whether you’re in favour of trashy golds, childish glitter, or modern metallics in mixed hues, everyone from Nars to Revlon have offered up options.
So whether you’re matching your nails to your silk cami, or need to give a sophisticated jumpsuit a lift, fingers are the liveliest way to get in the mood without having to wear a christmas jumper.
So Balmain’s ultra-glossy red isn’t exactly shimmery or metallic, but it aches for attention. The bottle is pure 80s glamour and the red is the only red to be rocking this season.
Balmain, Nail Couture in Rouge, £18. Available at BeautyMart.
Crabtree & Evelyn surprised me with this deep metallic silver as I love their nail polishes. The bottles are chic and generously filled and the varnish itself is long-lasting and gives good coverage with one sweep. The pewter shade alluringly lifts black and will go with everything except gold; giving you plenty of room to try on the countless outfits you inevitably will.
Crabtree & Evelyn, Mica Nail Lacquer, £6. Available at Crabtree-Evelyn
By Terry’s sparkly polish is actually a top coat, which I often use on top of a dull navy or a punchy purple. The electric blue and silver speckled formula looks great on its own and is the sophisticated way to do glitter nails.
By Terry, Nail Laque, £21. Available at Space NK.
Urban Decay’s iridescent gunmetal polish perfectly compliments smokey eyes. The micro flecks of silver, slate and emerald green glitter are masterly mixed to give a subtle but striking metallic finish.
The grungey shade is given even more edge by the skull-topped lid.
Urban Decay, Nail Colour in Addiction, £10. Available at Beauty Bay
Nars are great for creating intense and covetable colours. Night Flight, a metallic midnight which fittingly is part of the Night Series and also has a matching eyeshadow available; which I think is a pretty cool idea, especially with such an intense and dark blue. The polish is long wearing and chip resistant and as always, comes in a super chic Nars bottle.
Nars, Nail Polish in Night Flight, £14. Available at Nars cosmetics.
Mariah Carey is the Queen of Christmas, so it was no surprise that she was enlisted to create O.P.I’s Holiday Collection. The range which as my friend observed with unconcealed astonishment ‘is actually really classy’.
The collection features classic colours, whose rich pigment is timelessly appealing. One of my favourites is Visions of Love (a Mariah Carey classic), and shimmery rich magenta. If you’re feeling really festive All I want for Christmas, a pearlescent red is a winner too. Although, to be honest every shade is desirable. Most notably: Cute Little Vixen and My Santa Suit, which will keep you very happy until spring.
O.P.I Nails, Mariah Carey Holiday Collection, £10.35. Available at John Lewis.
Revlon’s Stunning, is an icy blue which couldn’t be more perfect for winter. Whether you’re channelling your inner snow queen or are looking to lift a navy or all black ensemble.
Revlon, Nail Enamel in Stunning 340, £6.50. Available at BeautyMart.
