Testing the Treatment – The Deramlogica Facial at Earthspa

There are moments in our lives, when certain treatments couldn’t come at a better time. In my case it was Earthspa‘s Dermalogica facial.

I have tried many facials before and, excluding one, have never had an issue and always left happy. I often worry about whether I’m too young to have facials, or whether if I get my skin too used to them it will start misbehaving and constantly be in want of them.  Yet, after every facial I wonder why I had left it so long.

The fact is that for anyone who lives in a city, particularly a heavily polluted one like London, a facial is a necessity and not a luxury. It’s not until the ‘extraction’ stage of a facial begins that I realise how clogged my pores are, and not until the 3 day cooling-off period that I remember how plump and luminous my skin can actually be, without the need of a radiance serum or primer.

With Testing the Treatment I always venture to salons and spas that are in places of interest, be it your neighbourhood or somewhere conveniently placed which you know you can always drop into at a moment’s notice. In terms of convenience, it doesn’t get much better than London’s Victoria station, for at some point in your life you’ll find yourself in its vicinity. Whether you’re on your way back from Chelsea, on your way to Oxford St, or you’ve just disembarked from a mammoth and not-at-all luxurious coach ride.

In any of these instances and more, Earthspa is the handiest of all spas, conveniently located across the road from Victoria station.

On my way to the spa, I accidentally went the long way around, but after giving the spa a quick call, they directed me to the right spot and when arrived in a fluster, I received the warmest of welcomes that instantly made me so happy to be a customer there.

To say city life, and life in general, can be stressful would be a massive understatement and after the week I’d had and the subsequent welcome of the Earthspa staff I instantly felt more at ease.
After my beautician took my coat, she led me to the therapy room to do my consultation, as I lay on the heated bed, so cosy that the wintery weather outside seemed like a world away.

We talked about my current skin concerns, which were a post-Christmas/late January bout of dehydration and decided that would be the day’s focus. After my face and décolletage were cleansed and then cleansed again with a hot towel I had already relaxed, helped along by a face, neck and shoulder massage and the soothing steam pump.
The beautician repeated the massage process throughout my facial as she applied various cooling gels that made my skin feel more plump with each layer. After massaging me into a state of calm,  she asked whether it was ok to do an extraction- which basically means squeezing out all the nasties within one’s pores. Pre-extraction, she assessed the condition of my skin underneath a light, which clearly showed that my skin was more dehydrated than even I had thought.
The extraction process wasn’t painful in any way and obviously wasn’t as relaxing as the previous treatments, but it was quickly over. Next was the exfoliation which was warming and not at all uncomfortable. My beauty therapist continued to massage in new layers and then remove them with the hot towel.

The massage in itself was worth any money and any tension in my head and shoulders was smoothed away. As I could sadly sense that the 55 minute treatment was nearing its end I embraced every moment, feeling the most relaxed I had felt in months. As she finished up, my firm new face was given a final moisturise and my therapist gave me the lowdown on what I should do over the next 3 days to preserve my facial and gave me some samples to ensure my skin was looked after.

After I had pulled myself off the therapy table and back into the reception area, I was greeted by the receptionist who gave me an Earthspa candle to complete the process.
I am yet to experience Dermalogica anywhere else, but after my experience at the Earthspa, I don’t at all feel the need to. It was by far the best facial and the most rejuvenating and relaxing experience I’ve had in ages. I guess that’s why they call it beauty therapy.
