Get the Look – Retro Modern

Perhaps I’m being inspired by my new sixties bob, or the AW14 shows of Paris, Milan and London have sub-consciously infiltrated my brain, but either way, I’m feeling very retro. And it seems its not just me. The High-St is playing host to more polo necks than I’ve ever seen; and what better to pair a polo neck with, than an A-line skirt? It’s as if the Sixties style sirens are beckoning us all.

Yet for a change we’re not all walking around as retro throwbacks, this time around its all about choosing key pieces to channel your era of choice.

The key to keeping things modern, is toning down a single element, so if you’re going for a roll neck and a wing, maybe opt for skinny jeans and trainers or if you fancy going Sixties with a polo and skirt, keep make-up to a minimum, or keep your hair simple.

The key to looking retro modern and not just retro is balance. Here are my four formulas for success.

The Polo neck – tight, oversized or as a dress.

Perfect a la Kate Moss with skinnies, or Alexa with an A-line mini, also seen on the catwalks at Gucci, Tom Ford and Louis Vuitton for AW14

miss selfridge roll neck

Urban Outfitters have every kind of polo neck top you could ask for, this is a good place to start, £18, Urban Outfitters

A dress makes life pretty easy. Wear with a long pendant and knee high boots, £155 , Whistles

And an old school classic, ribbed for your pleasure, £25, Miss Selfridge

The skirt – A-line or Leopard, either will do.

The button up skirt is where my obsession began. Pair with a fluffy jumper or roll neck and tuck in for serious style points.

Or go for a classic button up, £38, Urban Outfitters

The Hair – Bangs or a Bob.

Depending on your hair length there are two hairstyles that elevate this look. Big bold bangs like Sophie Marceau, a tousled bob like Lea Seydoux or an old school up-do like Sienna’s.
