Weddings, festivals, raves and beach days, summer calls for a host of hairstyles, but there’s one that’s seen a resurgence this season- the humble high pony. A schoolgirl favourite, the high ponytail is the perfect low maintenance look. For day or night, nothing is more nonchalant.
So versatile is the easy up-do that Lily James chose it to show off her new brunette hair and perk up summer black. Kendall Jenner opted for a dishevelled do to add a little edge to her white chiffon blouse and Chanel Espadrilles (which I’ve been hunting the internet down for, sadly to no avail.)
Surprisingly striking as an accent to the understated, or high octane, the high pony is the perfect look to add an air of insouciance to an embellished evening gown (a la Poppy Delevingne) or give high tops and high-waisted cut-offs a touch of glamour.
Get the Look:
If you want a more polished pony, recreate hairstylist Guido Paulo’s Prada ponytail, as seen at the brand’s AW15 show.
All you need is Redken’s Stay High 18 Holding Gel Mousse, a hair band, some clips and a little hairspray.
Guido says:
“With Stay High 18, you get the hold of a gel and the airiness of a mousse. Whether you want your style with a little bit of root lift or a full head of volume, this is your go-to product.”
Apply a little Stay High (£19, LookFantastic) to damp hair and sweep in an upwards motion away from the hairline, blow drying your hair as flat as possible.
After you’ve secured your high pony with a hairband, wrap a little hair around the band to conceal it.
Lightly backcomb the ponytail at the root, before gently smoothing with a paddle brush to one side.
Secure the tail with a few curby grips before concealing them with a decorative slide or two. Finish with a spritz of hairspray, Redken’s Quick Dry Shaping Mist (£10.75, LookFantastic), is Guido’s favourite.
