Breakups are the worst: but hell really hath no fury like a woman scorned (see Beyoncé’s LEMONADE for proof). Though we all might be used to sad skin and puffy eyes in the aftermath of heartbreak; as Queen B proves, there’s no reason you can’t look your best whilst feeling your worst.
And so, a quick guide to breakup beauty…
Stage 1: Recovery.
Experience has taught me that, looking in the mirror only to see a sobbing mess crying back at you, only makes matters worse; so wherever you are a quick splash of cold water will do you the world of good. Next stop find a Boots.
Clinique’s Chubby in the Nude makeup stick is a great portable foundation for this kind of situ. Sweep lightly over tear-tracks, then layer more generously on red areas for an instant but suitably sheer coverage.
It’s always handy to have an eyelash comb to hand for revitalising clumpy lashes, but if you don’t (and let’s be honest who does?!) Give your mascara wand a good wipe and throw on a light coat, before pinching your lower lashes into sixties style Twigs. Alternatively, blink tightly, then smudge under and around the eye for a grungier, purposefully miserable look.
A hint of Bourjois blush on the apples of your cheeks will revive your complexion to the point where you look positively sunny.
If it’s a case of Adele 21 and straight to bed, make sure you down a pint of cold water and splash your face first. An ice cube under the eyes is also useful if you’re prone to bags after a good cry.
Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Eye is wonderful when patted on right before falling asleep—and bonus! —the lavender and evening primrose oils will help to soothe you in your sorrow.
If you’ve managed to follow these steps, you’ll wake up feeling at least vaguely human and primed for your first look as a single lady. Start with Decleor’s Aromessence Rose d’orient Oil. This is a fantastic investment piece for sensitive skin and is enriched with camomile, Damask rose and blackcurrant seeds to help calm redness and irritation, leaving your face plump and radiant for your next steps.
Your base is up to you, but a solid mattifying and brightening eye treatment is probably going to be vital. Garnier’s Anti Dark Circles, Benefit’s Puff Off and Clarins Instant Light Eye Perfecting Base are all excellent choices when applied in a generous V-shape under the eye. Next, highlight the highpoints of your face (top of cheekbones, bridge of nose and cupid’s bow are all winners.) MAC’s Global Glow is ideal, and a small dot in the inner corners of your eyes is an instant eye opener.
Finish with a few coats of Lancôme’s Hypnose waterproof mascara and a mood-boosting lippy. Go with the brightest, boldest shade you love. Personally, I’m a big fan of a sassy red lip and Topshop’s Rio Rio is a vibrant tomato red, that will instantly surmount your state of mind.
Above all, this look is about making you feel good again, so add any extra touches that will make you smile and pop on our post-breakup power list.
