It’s official the 80s are back. Hot on the heels of the 90s trend that is no longer a trend and more a way of life, the era that declared big as better, is back in, a big way.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of Hedi Slimane at Saint Laurent, the trend has finally stuck and we’re rocking sequins, single shoulder dresses and power sleeves.
Choosing between the two eras is quite impossible and not actually necessary. Whilst I love a well lined brown lip and high waisted mom jean, stepping out on the town in a tiny dress and your best 10 deniers is strangely empowering. It feels Parisian which is odd because the Parisians aren’t really known for flashing the flesh, but it seems very left bank club scene, hanging out with A$AP somehow. It’s a very model look and one that I feel that even if you are a model, you will still need a heel: kitten, or stiletto, depending on your height and how much you can deal with crouching for photos.

I road tested the trend for my birthday this September and rocked out in a vintage one-shouldered, long sleeved, black velvet mini with blush pink kitten heels. It was a look that I still think of fondly, and one I’m looking forward to reprising when I find an occasion for which I want to showcase so much leg.
The great thing about this 80s revival is the fact that it manages to encompass so many of the season’s moods: maximalism, velvet, thin heels and statement dresses.
For day I will be keeping things slighlty more 90s, but for the night I’ll be going big, bold and reckless. If you’re worried about this look’s staying power or whether it will work for next season, look to Hedi’s successor at Saint Laurent, Anthony Vaccarello, who seamlessly married the two eras, with an 80s party on top paired with 90s pragmatism on the bottom.
