After a rocky 2016, it seems we are all committed to making 2017 a year of hope, togetherness and possibility. If 2016 was the apocalypse, then 2017 is the year we dust ourselves off, walk through the rubble and saunter off into the sunset.
For SS17 it was surely no surprise then, that designers looked to the 80s for inspiration. The era of excess and boundless possibility, seemed the perfect antidote to sombre ’16. Our favourite eighties beauty homage? Topshop Unique’s side parted curly hair, terracota eyes and outlandish Zebra.
If 80s beauty isn’t your thing, there was plenty to be thankful for at Yves Saint Laurent, thanks to Anthony Vaccarello. I’m pretty sure no-one else could make lamé look so chic. That paired with the YSL logo heels, rolled-up denim low riders and tropical-hued tassel earrings, it was near perfection; and all offset with fresh faces and undone hair.
Maria Grazia Chiuri also managed to make waves as the new Creative Director at Dior. The former Valentino designer, gave the Parisian house a much needed feminine touch, with speckled tulle, ribbon tie kitten heels and Dior branded straps on corset topped gowns; with a Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie t-shirt: reminding us to ‘all be feminists’, thrown in for good measure.
So here’s to 2017: the year of endless possibility and great clothes.
